Hollow One
A Hollow One is a mortal who has died and been restored to life. The void left by your departed soul is filled with strange magic, granting you aspects of undeath while retaining your personality and memories. Becoming a Hollow One is a supernatural gift and does not replace your character's race.
Traits
- Ageless. You don't age, and are immune to any effect that would age you.
- Cling to Life. When you roll a death saving throw and roll a 16 or higher, you regain 1 hit point.
- Revenance. You retain your original creature type, but you also register as Undead to spells and effects that sense undead.
- Unsettling Presence. As an action, you can choose a creature within 15 feet you can see. That target has disadvantage on the next saving throw it makes within the next minute. (Constructs, undead, and creatures immune to the frightened condition are immune to this feature.) You cannot use this feature again until you finish a long rest.
Description
A Hollow One may appear as they did in life, but magic or senses that detect undead will recognize them as such. Most Hollow Ones arise in Wildemount, especially Blightshore, where the strange magic lingers. They can be any ancestry and can be created either at 1st level (with DM approval) or as a result of dying during a campaign.
Society
In Wildemount’s Blightshore, Hollow Ones are part of the social fabric, particularly in places like Rotthold, where they make up a small but notable minority. Their extraordinary state is met with varying degrees of acceptance elsewhere.
Notable Hollow Ones
- Jamedi Cosko — Adventurer from Wildemount.
- Laudna — Warlock/Sorcerer, member of Bells Hells.
- Alonne Frith — Scholar from Rotthold, cultist of Ceratos.
Trivia
- Hollow One is not a race, but a supernatural gift; you keep your normal racial traits.
- You are, for most spell and feature effects (like Turn Undead), treated as undead in addition to your original type.
- Hollow Ones do not need to eat, drink, or breathe as frequently as normal mortals.
- With DM approval, a Hollow One may lose their immortality/traits due to powerful magical effects such as Divine Intervention or wish spells.
